The first thing that strikes you about David Hockney's portraits is their intense personal nature.
It's as if a window has opened into his world, and you are allowed to glimpse his friends, family and even the artist
himself through his eyes.
Utilizing oil paintings, photography, drawings, etchings and lithographs, Hockney has documented
his life through art, painting his parents, close friends, and such notables as Andy Warhol, Billy Wilder and W.H. Auden.

In addition to painting and drawings, Hockney used photographs in his art, creating photo-collages of individuals, groups
and various scenes. Hockney would take many pictures of a scene, moving the subject or himself to see it from various
angles. He never cut the photos, but arranged them in ways that allow the viewer to see the subject from a different
perspective. Some of the work is reminiscent of cubism, some in tribute to Picasso.
The MFA, Boston is exhibiting some of Hockney's portraits in a temporary exhibit running from February 26 until May 14,
2006. The artwork is grouped according to the subject, ranging from his parents, to long-time friend Celia Birtwell,
to guards at National Museum and showcases the artist's use of various mediums and his development throughout his career.
